This song is about coming to terms with deep-seated feelings of loss or unfulfillment. Each verse follows a different person who I've watched struggle with gaining closure on painful life events, be it death of a family member, a bad breakup, or a schism between siblings that never closes.
lyrics
Hey father who art now in heaven I've been living a little loose
its doing me wrong
And the leaves on the trees and the shaking in my knees
cast shadows on the bedroom walls
Well the talk's all cheap and the dogs bite deep
its just shades of missing you
And this cracks in my skin where your lifeline's been
trace your face in grays and blues
And I'm sorry cause I've done all I can sir, to find answers, to the cancers
That lie inside of my head and your bones, your bones, please call home
Cause oh oh oh you left me hanging on the telephone
(You left me) hanging on the phone, hanging on the phone, hanging on the telephone
Dearly beloved, we're gathered together birds of a feather
C'mon tell me, just what I've done wrong
Cause these days are like sand wasting through my hands
But the nights never felt this long
And I've been hurdling for the alter since I first learned
To kiss and lose
Now I've got a love with a name but he keeps on changing
It every year or two
Now I'm lost and I don't know where I came from, I need a bottle
or some breadcrumbs
To help me find my way back to my home, my home, please call home
Cause oh oh oh you left me hanging on the telephone
Hey sister, rub another blister on the family tapestry
Can't hurt anymore
Cause its a threadbare thought that I might be shot
Of that pain walking out that door
I was fool enough to try and patch things up,
Fix any hole if I had enough gauze
But now I'm the barrel and the stock, going off half cocked
any time I find half a cause
